XL Batteries’ Organic Flow Battery Meets or Exceeds Lithium-Ion for Grid-Scale Long-Duration Energy Storage

XL Batteries has demonstrated that its non-flammable, water-based Organic Flow Battery delivers utility-grade performance in the field. In a demonstration deployment with Stolthaven Terminals, XL’s system matched lithium-ion performance across all grid services without risk of flammability or need for supply chain constrained minerals.  Analysts believe that flow batteries are poised to take a growing share of the long-duration energy storage (LDES) market, particularly at durations beyond 4–8 hours where alternatives can gain a total-cost advantage over Li-ion. The results of XL’s deployment validate a safe, scalable, low-cost path to grid-scale LDES.

Efficiency Matters!

The common misconception that solar and wind energy is almost “free” has led to a further misconception that efficiency will not matter when it comes to evaluating future competitive LDES technologies.  The argument usually goes that since renewable energy is almost free, waste doesn’t matter.  We disagree. We believe that round trip efficiency is a critical and undervalued success factor for determining which technology can deliver an actual LCOS <$0.05/kWh and be poised to dominate the rapidly expanding LDES market.

Global Lithium Dependency & The Future of Energy Storage

From raw material mining to cell manufacturing, China owns more than 90% of the Li-ion supply chain. This has created a global strategic vulnerability similar to Europe’s dependence on Russian natural gas -- a reliance that exposed the region to severe geopolitical and economic consequences following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The world cannot afford a similar fate in the clean energy race.
